Irvine Welsh was born in Leith in 1958. The film of his first book Trainspotting was released in 1996 to huge acclaim and popularity.
In its first weekend Trainspotting took a staggering £500,000.


Irvine Welsh's life can be charted from Edinburgh's tough Muirhouse estate through a series of jobs including T.V. repairman and clerical temp with Hackney Council. He managed to combine doing an MBA at Herriot-Watt University with writing short stories.
